“My girlfriend was renting an apartment in Chicago, and I sat down one day and wrote that on the piano there. That was a weird one that Michael finished but didn’t like. But Peter and I were like, “It’s great!” He’s like, “I hate it.” And then Thom Yorke comes up and goes, “That’s the best song you’ve ever done.” Michael’s like, “Really?! I guess it’s all right then.” Sometimes it takes an outside opinion to open your eyes.”

Reckoner (acoustic)
Thom Yorke
“Reckoner,” Thom Yorke (Live on Jonathon Ross.) Radiohead’s Thom Yorke turns 42 today, and to celebrate I wanted to share this great acoustic version of “Reckoner.” Absent the great clattering drums and insinuating Johnny Greenwood guitar line from the original, Yorke’s voice is revealed as the true star of the song — aching and otherworldly, it remains my favorite falsetto in rock. Happy birthday, Thom. (download)

Wish You Were Here (Ft. Thom Yorke)
Sparklehorse
“Wish You Were Here,” Sparklehorse. Chromewaves captured the essence of Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous today in a warm remembrance: “Few were able to tap into that place of beautiful sadness which Linkous seemed to have a direct line to, let alone refine it into glittering, dusty gems of song as he was able to. Sparklehorse records always seemed to be transmissions from another world, with themes of spirits, the afterlife recurring throughout. Linkous frequently wrote from a place of sadness, but always yearned for a happiness that was as simple as it seemed elusive. I hope he’s found some of the peace he was looking for in the next world; this one is that much sadder and far less beautiful without him in it.” Here Linkous teamed with Thom Yorke to invest Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” with whispering melancholy; Yorke sang his vocals over the phone from a hotel room. “Initially, it was like, “What?!” But Thom Yorke did it, and we like him. It’s like: “If dad does it, it’s OK, right?” Radiohead are like parents of good modern rock ‘n’ roll in certain ways. They paved that path.”
Stream “Hearing Damage,” Thom Yorke’s contribution to the SpongeBob SquarePants New Moon soundtrack, for as long as YouTube leaves it up. Had anyone else recorded it I’d call this track boring, but since it’s Yorke we’ll go with “atmospheric.” (via)
A few noteworthy items I missed on my recent trip to see Phoenix and the Walkmen:
- Thom Yorke and his new supergroup played a few shows and debuted new songs, of which there are now MP3s.
- Stream two new Frightened Rabbit album tracks.
- Grizzly Bear and Beach House teamed up to perform a new song live.
- Sunny Day Real Estate played Jimmy Fallon.
- The XX played “Islands” on my Dad’s favorite show, Jools Holland. Meanwhile, new fan video for “Crystallized.”
