DJ Earworm Mashup - United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom)

Having mashed up the year’s top pop hits for four years, DJ Earworm could be forgiven for feeling like the whole thing is kind of played out. When oversamplers like the Black Eyed Peas can top the charts with “originals” that sound suspiciously like mash-ups to begin with, why bother sticking the rest of the top 25 in a blender?

One answer is that every year deserves a class portrait: some record of the stars who monopolized our eardrums and eyeballs. There’s something comforting about seeing them all together like this, the prom queens sharing space with the class clowns, the jocks jockeying for time with the nerds. About halfway through you first hear from a girl you’d never have noticed at school, had she not signed up for the talent show. “We could have had it all,” she sings, young enough to believe herself.

Given the demands of the form, there’s not a lot of heart here — lots of “boom boom boom” and “woah oh oh,” with any gaps filled in with the shaking of ass. But as a high-school talent show “United State of Pop 2011” is a buoyant success. It says to us: end your year not with mopey sentimentalism, but jazz hands. I’m game.

DJ Earworm, United States of Pop 2010 (Don’t Stop The Pop)

DJ Earworm once again takes Billboard’s Top 25 songs of the year and mashes them up. I went back and listened to the excellent mixes from 2008 and 2009, and come to the conclusion that 2010 was a pretty shit year for pop music (at least the biggest Billboard hit stuff). DJ Earworm doesn’t help hear either by taking the easy way out and basing most of the song on Ke$ha and Katy Perry (#1 and #4 on the list, respectively), and everyone already knows that those two songs are exactly the same song, written by the same asshole. So a bit of a disappointment, but hey, there was plenty of great music this year **cough ROBYN cough**. It’s just that most people don’t know about it.

All true. I love Earworm, but I didn’t even bother to download this one.

DJ Earworm’s summer mash-up includes snippets of “Tik Tok,” “Rude Boy,” and Bieber, and is great despite all those things! (download)

“United State of Pop 2009,” DJ Earworm. As he did last year and the year before, Earworm has mashed up the 25 most popular songs of the year: “Use Somebody,” “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” “I Gotta Feeling,” “Love Story,” “Right Round,” “I’m Yours,” and so many more. As an audio yearbook, this is a masterpiece. (download)
