Civilian
Wye Oak
Beach House’s Teen Dream ruled so hard last year that you have to ask: Is there room in indie rock for two somber, woman-fronted duos from Baltimore? Wye Oak makes a good case with “Civilian,” the title track from the band’s third full-length. It’s a slow-burning lament in which Jenn Wasner lays bare her solitude: “I don’t need another friend,” she sings, “I still can’t kiss my own neck.” Drummer Andy Stack keeps time as Wasner’s guitar shreds wildly — shockingly — in the darkness. If you have known grief you know this is what it sounds like: loud, desperate, at odds with itself. Outstanding.
