“Louisiana,” the Walkmen. It’s sometimes a challenge to decide which song to post on a given day. But today I booked a plane flight to see the Walkmen in Louisiana, so this seemed the logical choice. The song was the giveaway MP3 for the band’s third album, A Hundred Miles Off, which was more or less a flop. “Louisiana” was a strange detour for a band better known for louche, alienated howling. In its place had come a Dylanesque ramble: “crossing Tennessee watching the sunrise, thinking about a dream.” A horn section perks up, pumps some life into the tale. The band’s best work was still to come, but this made for pleasant humming in the meantime.
